SPRING into TEXAS by visiting Washington County!
Antique Rose Emporium-Independence, TX
One of the most significant historical destinations in Texas is located in Washington County - Washington-on-the Brazos State Historic Site. The Declaration of Independence from Mexico was written here and the town of Washington served as the capital of the Republic of Texas. The site includes a replica of Independence Hall, the Star of the Republic Museum and Barrington Living History Farm, the 1850s home of the last president of the Republic, Anson Jones, complete with costumed interpreters and farm operations of the period.
As you visit other historical and culturally important sites, you’ll travel along picturesque county roads. Experience incredible wildflower displays, the unique architecture displayed in classic plantations, vintage homes and churches, and beautiful horse farms. Visit the Burton Cotton Gin & Museum and the original seats of education in Texas in the tiny towns of Independence and Chappell Hill, just to name a few key points of interest.
With a county-wide population a bit over 30,000, Brenham, the county seat, claims nearly 14,000 residents. Founded in 1844 during the Republic of Texas era, it soon became the county seat. Typical of many small towns of that era, Brenham developed around the central courthouse square. A majority of the buildings in the downtown historic district exhibit both German and Czech influences that are still evident today. Brenham has developed into one of the most complete small cities in Texas, with a strong sense of preservation for its past as well as careful planning for the future.
Brenham and Washington County provide an incredible selection of bed & breakfasts and resorts for overnight stays, ranging from rustic log cabins to high-end historic buildings that have been carefully preserved. And, wedding facilities include everything from the intimate to historic dance halls to beautiful outdoor settings.
From simple country cooking to fine dining in a 5-star facility, the selection of places to dine is wide-ranging. Catering options are also available.
Touring and tasting opportunities can be found at Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham, as well as at two winery locations. Several golf courses are located in the area, and kids and adult kids can have a great time at a local family fun park that features Laser Tag, miniature golf and bowling, and video games. Outdoor activities include wildlife viewing and birding, fishing and boating at Lake Somerville, hunting, cycling, horseback riding, year-round festivals of all types and live theatre.
Washington County is also well known as a shopping destination -- especially for antiques and Texas-made products. Visit charming town squares and main streets to enjoy intriguing buying adventures.
Most activities and destinations are no more than 15-20 minutes from each other, so many events and sites may be enjoyed in a single day’s tour. As a recent visitor said about the area, “Visiting Washington County is like stepping into a postcard. I kept thinking to myself, ‘Is this place real?’ ”
Indeed it is, and its rural ambience and upscale amenities provide just the right mix for a true laid-back Texas lifestyle. For detailed information, visit www.brenhamtexas.com.
